From 2005 to 2009, Steinbrook was a member of the Grand coalition government and Prime Minister Angela Merkel's parliament. During the German economic crisis, responsible for handling economic affairs to overcome the impact of the crisis. Through his work, the budget for 2008 was almost flat, but government loans still broke historical records. After graduating, Stanbrook worked in the federal government's Chancellor office. In 1993, Stanbrook was appointed as the Minister of Economy, Technology, and Transportation for Schleswig Holstein State. In 1998, he was appointed as the Minister of Economy and Infrastructure. In 2000, he was appointed as the Minister of Finance of North Rhine Westphalia and later promoted to the position of Director of the Office. As the Minister of Finance, one of Stanbrook's main contributions was the creation of tax identification numbers through years of discussion. In 1993, he was appointed as the Minister of Economy and Infrastructure of Schleswig Holstein State. Afterwards, he returned to North Rhine Westphalia. In 1998, he was appointed as the Minister of Economy and Infrastructure of North Rhine Westphalia. In 2000, he was appointed as the Minister of Finance. From 2002 to 2005, Stanley was appointed as Prime Minister of North Rhine Westphalia and led a coalition government composed of SPD and the Green Party. After the 2005 German parliamentary elections, SPD and CDU formed a major coalition government under the leadership of Chancellor Angela Merkel. Steinbreck became Germany's Minister of Finance.
