Stanley McChrystal, former top commander of the US military and NATO International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan, served as the commander of the Joint Special Operations Command from 2003 to 2008. He has participated in multiple special operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, and his troops have captured Saddam alive and helped overthrow the Taliban regime. His greatest achievement was the air raid on the Iraqi branch of Al Qaeda in 2006, which killed its leader, Zarqawi. McChrystal is believed to be adept at using intelligence to track and eliminate insurgents, and protecting civilians through non-traditional warfare. In December 2009, he was elected as one of Time magazine's top figures of the year for changing the US military strategy in Afghanistan.
