Hans G \u00f6 ran Persson, former Swedish Prime Minister from March 22, 1996 to October 6, 2006, was one of the longest serving Swedish Prime Ministers and also served as the Chairman of the Swedish Social Democratic Party. Persson was born into a working family in Wenok, South Manland Province, adjacent to Stockholm. He studied political science at Olebro College from 1969 to 1971. In 2005, he was awarded an honorary doctorate in medicine by the University of Erebro. Served in the military from 1973 to 1974. In the 1970s, he worked at the SSU of the Swedish Social Democratic Youth League, serving as the organizational secretary of the Social Democratic Youth League and an official at the Adult Education Bureau in South Manland Province. From 1972 to 1975, he was a national member of the Youth League and a member of parliament in the small city of Katerinmore. Elected as a member of the National Assembly in 1979, he left the parliament in 1984 and returned to Carthamo as mayor from 1985 to 1989. In 1989, he was re elected as a member of parliament and appointed as the Minister of Education of the government. In 1991, the Social Democratic Party failed in the election and he left the government. He has successively served as the Chairman of the Council's Agriculture Committee and a member of the Council's Business and Industry Committee. In 1993, he became the Vice Chairman of the Finance Committee of the Parliament and also served as the spokesperson for the Social Democratic Party's economic issues. After the Social Democratic Party regained power in 1994, he served as the Chancellor of the Exchequer. In 1996, he succeeded as Prime Minister and leader of the Social Democratic Party, serving as Prime Minister for 10 years and being one of the longest serving Swedish Prime Ministers. In September 2002, he led the Social Democratic Party to win the general election and was re elected as Prime Minister in October of the same year. But he was defeated in the general election on September 17, 2006 and was unable to be re elected as Prime Minister, which also ended the Social Democratic Party's long-standing monopoly in power for over 80 years. Persson has a great eloquence and often gives up prepared speeches to improvise. He is also an iron fisted leader, earning the nickname HSB during his tenure as mayor, which is the Swedish abbreviation for Han som best \u00e4 mmer, meaning he makes decisions.
