Matthew Friedman is an international trafficking expert with over 25 years of experience as an activist, project designer, evaluator, and manager. He is currently the CEO and co founder of The Mekong Club, a Hong Kong based organization composed of business professionals from the private sector committed to taking joint action to combat human trafficking in Asia. He is the recipient of the Asia Public Affairs Network Annual Best Communicator Award and has delivered over 200 speeches to hundreds of companies worldwide in the past few short years. From 2006 to 2012, Friedman was the regional project manager for the United Nations Inter-Agency Mekong Subregion Anti Abduction Project (UNITAP) in Thailand, which linked the United Nations system with governments and civil society groups in China, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. From 1991 to 2006, Friedman worked for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Thailand, Bangladesh, and Nepal. Friedman is a technical advisor to multiple governments committed to abolishing slavery. He often appears in media reports on human trafficking and slavery in Southeast Asia, including Forbes, BBC, CNN, and Bloomberg, and is invited to give speeches at major conferences worldwide. He has published 12 books on topics including human trafficking and ancient metal casting art in Bangladesh. Matthew Friedman, a former expert at the United States Agency for International Development and the United Nations, outlined the latest developments in human trafficking, which is often overlooked as a modern form of crime. Friedman has worked on the ground in over ten Asian countries for 25 years and possesses in-depth first-hand knowledge. He wrote that human trafficking exists in almost any country on Earth, and few people realize that there are tens of thousands of men, women, and children living a slave like life in the United States alone. Friedman interviewed hundreds of free slaves and imprisoned human traffickers in South and Southeast Asia. The slave industry has a market value of $1 billion and continues to grow without restraint. Slaves work in manufacturing industries such as brothels, fishing grounds, clothing, and chocolate. Based on his deep personal experience in combating illegal transactions, Friedman has provided relevant advice and guidance, providing valuable lessons for those who want to work in this industry. As a government worker, Friedman is committed to eliminating global apathy and bringing together more contemporary abolitionists. His latest TEDX speech supplemented the content of the book.
